Your Questions Answered

What is Occupational Therapy?

Pediatric Occupational Therapy (OT) assesses a child's development, including but not limited to their gross motor, fine motor, self-care, feeding, behavior, and school-readiness skills. An OT also assesses the child's sensory processing system, as this directly impacts their nervous system, energy levels, attention to task, and ability to tolerate all senses in their environments. Together, we will decide which areas seem to be impacting your child's development and ability to function, and we will work together to help your child achieve goals and make strides in those areas. As an OT, I will serve as your "coach" and offer strategies, ideas, and techniques to help your child and your family meet these goals for optimal functioning in your busy and exciting lives!

Why is therapy provided in the home?

A child's home is their most natural environment. This is where they feel most comfortable and where they participate in their unique family routines each day. Working with your child at home will allow for your therapist to assess any difficulties or challenges within your specific routines and activities to determine the most effective treatment plan. Therapy can also take place in a variety of contexts, such as your backyard, local park, or daycare setting depending on your child's needs.

What does a therapy session look like?

Play, engagement, connection, and fun! Your therapist will create specific activities to address your child's goals established during the evaluation process. Your therapist may bring toys and activities, or will utilize your child's favorite toys, materials, and items in their home.

What does an evaluation look like?

Prior to scheduling your evaluation, your therapist will send any questionnaires or intake forms to complete to gain an understanding of your child's developmental history, strengths, interests, and current needs. The evaluation will take place in your home and will last 60-90 minutes. Your therapist will bring specific, play-based activities to complete with your child to assess their current level of functioning across several areas, depending on your current concerns. Your therapist will compile this information into an Evaluation Report, including short-term and long-term goals agreed upon with you.
